SOCIHACKS Girls In STEM/STEAM Hackathon @ California State University Channel Islands

On April 2, SOCIHACKS facilitated Girls In STEM/STEAM, a hackathon sponsored and hosted by the Martin V. Smith School of Business and Economics at California State University, Channel Islands in Camarillo, CA.

100 young girls ages 8 – 13 from Ventura and Los Angeles counties participated in the environmental Girls In STEM/STEAM hackathon!

Through their own research, an impressive list of community role models and guest speakers in the fields of environmental science, politics, business, technology, videography and photography, students learned first hand the environmental issues facing the Santa Monica Mountains and the Channel Islands.

Beginning at 9am, students were grouped into 10 problem solving teams with an adult facilitator, a laptop and a willingness to protect the environment in which they live! Students researched the environmental issues at hand, then rotated between video production, digital storytelling and web development stations to create then present the videos you see here at 2PM!

We are so proud of each of these young women and can’t wait to see the mark they leave on the world! You go girls!

"It literally changed my life!"

I had the privilege of volunteering for one of Ventura County’s very first SOCIHACKS hackathons held at CSUCI and it literally changed my life. The room was filled with excitement and energy "stemming" from young girls eager to learn in a completely unique forum which was primed perfectly to capture their passion for science & technology.

"I loved being part of the STEAM leadership program!"

What do you get when you mix a bunch of young post-millennials, some baby boomers, and a couple of millennials with a goal and a deadline? You get a lot of creative action and a darned good product! I loved being part of the STEAM leadership program!

"Truly inspirational!"

I was fortunate to be asked to volunteer for the CSUCI/Verizon Inspire Her Mind Event. As the day unfolded their excitement to create a web page and interact with each other was magical to witness. This event allowed for these young minds to explore a new path to excellence in exciting thriving careers offered at CSUCI.
